We are still experiencing unusual weather for this time of year. Some days are cool and some days are warm. Our deer don't seem to mind. They come to the hosta buffet quite often. They chew the leaves to the ground.

Father's Day is coming soon. I have to write about my father, Roy O’Dell. My dad respected his fellow man. He showed respect for my mother, his parents, his in-laws and his friends. Daddy taught my sister and myself to respect people. We respected our pastor, our teachers, our doctor, the adult friends of our parents and the people we went to school with. Daddy was a hard worker and he loved to hunt. He hunted squirrels for squirrel dumplings. He kept a rabbit trap set for fried rabbit, and he walked the woods at night coon hunting. Mother cooked all these animals. She knew how to cook a coon and make sage dressing. I only remember him killing one deer but that didn't stop him from deer hunting. After he got too old to hunt in the woods, he put his gun in his truck and would drive around thinking he would see a deer standing on the side of the road. He was always the optimist. One night daddy and his nephew Bill were coon hunting on Indian Creek. They were in an area where Indian Creek joins Toxaway River. They were determined to get the coon "ole" Red had been chasing. The Everready flashlight miss led Daddy on the depth of the water. He stepped and fell in the cold, cold water. Daddy's matches and lighter was drowned so they had no way to build a fire. They realized quickly that the hunt was over. Daddy took off his clothes and they wrung what water they could out of his clothes. Back to Pop O’Dell's house and got warm in front of the heater. That coon would be free until another night. Daddy was a joy to be around and always full of spirit. I can never forget what he said when my mother died. He summed her death up in one phrase, "She was a good woman." This is wishing all fathers a very happy Father's Day.
