At Runtal North America in Haverhill, Massachusetts, old-fashioned manufacturing is putting a new spin on the home heating system – specifically in the world of high-end heating products such as radiators and towel warmers.

"You will see these products all over Europe. They've been all over Europe for a long time," said Clark Zacaroli, vice president of marketing at Runtal.

The Swiss-based company started manufacturing in Ward Hill 35 years ago.

"No one else in the U.S. is making anything similar to what's being produced here," Zacaroli said.

Runtal's radiators offer comfort, efficiency and style to a wide range of customers. That includes their large commercial lines and residential division.

"The same handcrafted welded technology goes into both products. There is no difference between our construction of residential product or the heavy-duty stuff you see over at Logan," Zacaroli said.

That's right – designers and engineers who built the brand-new Terminal E at Logan International Airport called Runtal for its environmental and comfort needs.

"That building doesn't have any square corners in it. We had to accomplish design that flowed with the curving walls but also had enough heat to take care of the heat loss with their huge windows," Zacaroli said.

Inside the 100,000-square-foot manufacturing facility, Runtal has the capacity to produce upwards of 200 radiators per day, which comes in handy based on the interest being found by designers in the residential market.

Families are now calling Runtal to replace those big old cast iron radiators that can be found in many older homes.

Many have started retrofitting their pre-existing heating systems with these smaller, sleeker more modern units.
